What it really costs

Pricing model from the October 2026 comparison matrix. Figures marked (est.) are triangulated from secondary sources, not vendor-published; (secondary) figures come from secondary reporting.

Consumer $8–$500/mo (Pro tiers now Pro 100 $100 / Pro 200 $200 / Pro 500 $500 — OpenAI Help Center, checked 2026-10-14); Business $20 or $100/user/mo (annual); Enterprise custom; API GPT-6 Astra $10/$50 per 1M *(secondary)*

From the research report

Landscape Report, October 2026 edition — §1.1.

What happened recently: GPT-6 Astra launched Sep 3, 2026 — 1.05M-token context, positioned for computer use, software engineering, science, and professional work (TechCEO Daily, 9/30/26). It's the first OpenAI frontier model shipped in a restricted public version (cybersecurity capabilities held back). Its successor checkpoint GPT-6.1 Astra was cancelled Sep 28, 2026 for failing internal scope/safety tests (Reuters/Newsweek via explainx.ai, 10/4/26 — very fresh, worth re-verifying before citing to clients). At DevDay (Sep 29, 2026), OpenAI launched Dots: always-on agents powered by GPT-6 Astra, each with its own cloud computer + browser, 4,000+ app plugins, reachable from ChatGPT, Slack, and Teams (SMS "coming soon"). Custom rules govern act-alone vs. ask-permission; background tools are read-only; password changes stay human-side (BetaNews, 9/30/26). Custom GPTs are being retired (announced Sep 11, 2026, migrating to plugins, no end date yet — felloai, updated 10/5/26).

Pricing (current):

Agent-building features: Dots (one included with Pro and Business Premium at no extra cost; one Dot per user at launch — matches Chris's verified constraint); Agents API, computer use, Decisions API, MCP events, plugin extensions, hosted shell, Skills; 4,000+ app plugin ecosystem.

Key limits: One Dot per user at launch (teams of Dots "coming over time"); Dots Pro rollout excludes EEA/Switzerland/UK; Plus users get Astra only in ChatGPT Work and Codex, not chat; no training on business data by default; Astra's public version is capability-restricted.

Key limits

No training on business data by default; Astra capability-restricted; Custom GPTs retiring; Plus users don't get Astra in chat; Pro 200 reopened to new subs at a LOWER included allowance — grandfathered allowance ends Oct 29, 2026, lower allowance from Oct 30 (price unchanged $200)
